DIVERSITAS and its community are deeply committed to developing a science for global sustainability based on the recognition of the importance of, and different values of biodiversity and ecosystem services. DIVERSITAS projects are actively involved in providing input for the development of the implementation strategy of the Future Earth research framework. This implementation strategy will be finalised by the newly appointed Future Earth Scientific Committee, in which the biodiversity and ecosystem services community is well represented. The Future Earth Scientific Committee will hold its first meeting on 19-21 Nov 2013 in Gauteng, South Africa.
Another major development is the establishment of the interim secretariat for Future Earth, and the nomination of Frans Berkhout, formerly Professor of Innovation and Sustainability, and Director of the Amsterdam Global Change Institute at the VU University Amsterdam, who will serve as Interim Executive Director until the permanent secretariat is established (end 2014).
