1st BIODIS workshop "Disentangling the linkages between biodiversity and emerging infectious diseases"

Organised by CESAB, supported by the French Foundation for Biodiversity Research (FRB) and DIVERSITAS, 27-31 May 2013, Aix-en-Provence, France

This workshop conveyed 12 scientists from different disciplines (ecology, evolutionary biology and public health) and countries (USA, Mexico, Italy, France). This group aims at understanding how the potential protective effect of biodiversity on infectious disease emergence and transmission can arise and when it should or not occur.

The objectives of the workshop were:

  • Finalizing on-going scientific manuscripts;
  • Brainstorming on different questions identified about the links between biodiversity and health; and
  • Setting priorities for the next meeting.

The following next steps have been decided for the next meeting:

  • Data centralization (15 infectious diseases will be studied comparatively);
  • First theoretical studies by the post-doctoral fellow hired by the group (we welcome Gabriel Garcia); and
  • Drafting first manuscripts.
