Chief Scientific Advisor to the Planet Under Pressure Conference (March 2012), Professor Elinor Ostrom, the first woman to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Economic Sciences, died on Tuesday, June 12, 2012, at the age of 78 after a battle with cancer.

Map of Life (MOL) is a new interactive portal for global biodiversity research. It offers a variety of biodiversity data, such as species distribution maps, GBIF point data and checklists for all amphibians, mammals and bird species worldwide, as well as a number of species of other taxa (freshwater fishes, reptiles). Data coverage and functionality will be greatly enhanced over the next months.

News Item Thomas Lovejoy awarded Blue Planet Prize 2012 for lifetime achievement in conservation!
Tom Lovejoy is a Professor of Environmental Science and Policy at George Mason University, and a former member of the US DIVERSITAS National Committee. He received the award for pioneering work in biodiversity science and conservation, including how human-caused habitat fragmentation causes biodiversity loss.
