Hosted by the Earth Institute Center for Environmental Sustainability (EICES) and the Wildlife Conservation Society.

The workshop is the third phase of a broad, interdisciplinary effort to develop the first global, science-based standards for PES projects.  It will bring together scientists, practitioners, policy-makers and business partners who, together, can help create these standards and an open access, web-based tool for science standards over the coming year.

The motivation for this workshop stems from the rapid expansion of the use of PES as a major instrument for conservation and environmental programs.  This expansion has led to a rich diversity of programs some of which are built upon excellent scientific (social and natural) foundations and some of which are less well designed.  Given this increasing importance of PES and the different PES designs that have emerged, it seems a global standard for establishing PES schemes could significantly aid project developers and help ensure that PES programs deliver upon their intended ecological, social and economic goals.
