The Conference is organised under the auspices of the Hellenic Presidency of the Council of the EU and its aim is to high light innovative tools, strategies and best practices in the field of Nature Based Solutions that European cities are adopting in order to combine tradition and modernity while addressing environmental challenges andthe impacts of the economic crisis.

While several initiatives have been focused either on sustainable urbandevelopment or on biodiversity and ecosystem services, few attempts have been made to connect these issues and assess the prospects for protecting biodiversity and supporting ecosystem services in urban andperi-urban areas. Therefore, this conference will bridge this knowledge and policy gap by involving different networks of stakeholders: urban developers and planners, local authorities, scientists, representative of the private sectors (i.e. construction and insurance companies).

Thomas Elmqvist, former Chair bioSUSTAINABILITY, will give a presentation on the outcomes of the Cities Biodiversity Outlook.
