Senior science coordinator at LOICZ IPO

At the Institute for Coastal Research, the Global Change research project LOICZ (Land-Ocean Interactions in the Coastal Zone) invites applications of a highly motivated and independent Senior Science Coordinator. The successful applicant will assist the CEO in his responsibility for a small dynamic team in the international project office, IPO (currently 3-4 people plus colleagues in two international locations). Worldwide, LOICZ engages a multiplicity of natural and social scientists and projects to study the influence of global and climatic change and in particular the role of humans in coastal zones ranging from drainage basins to the coastal shelf.

The position holder will have a leading responsibility in the planning, coordination and execution of the scientific activities that serve the delivery of the LOICZ goals. He/she will be in close consultation with the LOICZ SSC and the Priority Topic leaders as well as with the external scientific community and the growing number of LOICZ regional Nodes. Frequent international travelling is envisioned in the fulfilment of the position. In detail:

Responsibilites:
  • Assist the CEO in management and administration of the LOICZ International Project on a day-to-day basis
  • Promotion and coordination of LOICZ thematic and topical research (implementation plans); encompassing natural and social sciences (in close cooperation with Theme and Priority Topic leaders and task groups)
  • Organization of related meetings and workshops in support of the LOICZ Project Implementation
  • Coordination of product production and delivery incl. editing and dissimination of scientific publications
  • Providing project advocacy, promotion and publicity
  • Developing and maintaining links with other relevant international and national science networks, LOICZ or National Global Change Committees, agencies and initiatives including in particular the potential host institutions for IPO Nodes, donors and non-scientific clients incl. the media
  • Ensuring effective coordination with other Earth System Science Programme Elements (ESSP); and assist the IPO and SSC in fundraising efforts
Qualifications and experience:
  • A PhD (or equivalent research experience) in one of the relevant natural or social sciences
  • A broad interest in the scientific fields related to the LOICZ International Project; in particular related to the interaction between natural sciences and human dimensions
  • 3-5 years experience in management, organization and communication in an international field
  • Experience in the organisation of international meetings and workshops
  • A sound working knowledge of the English language (additional language e.g. German would be appreciated, but is not mandatory)
  • Flexibility and willingness to undertake extensive overseas travel
  • Experience in global change sciences and science management would be of advantage
