Programme Officer at TWAS

TWAS, the academy of sciences for the developing world, located in Trieste, Italy, is seeking a Programme Officer.

Primary responsibilities will be to: Assist in the design, implementation and coordination of the programmes of TWAS, the Third World Network of Scientific Organizations (TWNSO) and the Third World Organization for Women in Science (TWOWS) as decided upon by the governing bodies of these three organizations and as instructed by the Executive Director; provide supervision and guidance to TWAS staff responsible for various programmes, as decided by the Executive Director; prepare annual reports on the activities of various programmes; prepare regular narrative reports to donors and deliver according to their demand and schedule; maintain effective liaison and cooperation with other TWAS offices and relevant offices of the ICTP and UNESCO; prepare and develop drafts of new project proposals and assist in fundraising for approved projects.

You should have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral level experience in a scientific field; at least four (4) years of relevant professional experience in the design, development and implementation of scientific programmes in and for developing countries, which includes 2-3 years of database management and fellowship administration or similar experience; excellent drafting ability and communication skills, both oral and written, including the ability to elaborate on complex programme issues to all management levels; and experience in planning and organizing international/regional conferences, workshops and training courses, particularly in developing countries.

This is an extra-budgetary position of a continuing nature but the duration of the appointment will be subject to the availability of funds. UNESCO's salaries are calculated in US Dollars. They consist of a basic salary and a post adjustment which reflects the cost of living changes in a particular duty station and exchange rates. For this post, the annual remuneration will start, for the current exchange rate, at US$ 82,540 if there are no dependants and with US$ 88,426 if there are dependants, and is exempt from income tax. There is an attractive benefits package which includes 30 days of annual vacation, home travel, education grant for dependent children, pension plan and medical insurance.
