Robin Reid is a systems ecologist, leading research on livestock and environment issues at the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) in Nairobi, Kenya. She began her research career as a biologist in the US National Park Service, working on plant-herbivore interactions.

For the past two decades, Dr. Reid has worked in sub-humid and semi-arid lands in Africa, focusing on why and where land use changes occur and how such changes affect biodiversity and ecosystems more generally. In 1997, Dr. Reid founded an East African network of researchers called LUCID -Land Use Change Impacts and Dyamics (www.lucideastafrica.org), which integrates natural and social science to produce information for policy makers.

At ILRI, Dr. Reid currently leads a global pastoral systems project that attempts to balance pastoral development and ecosystem conservation (www.maasaimaracount.org). The pastoral team works with non-governmental organisations, government, communities and private industry to bring the best of science (field studies, GIS, remote sensing, and simulation modelling) to bear on critical conservation-development issues.
