Tohru Nakashizuka is Professor at the Research Institute for Humanity and Nature since 2001. He received his PhD in plant ecology from Osaka City University in 1983 and held positions as researcher at the Forestry and Forest Products Research Institute (1985), as Senior Researcher at the Japan International Research Center for Agricultural Sciences (1992), and as Professor at the Center for Ecological Research, Kyoto University (1995). His current research interests include biodiversity with particular interests in forest trees and organisms. He is also interested in canopy biology in tropical forests.

Prof. Nakashizuka is currently a member of the Associate Editor of EcoScience, and a member of the Editorial Board of Journal of Plant Research (Jpn). He also serves as Chair of DIWPA (DIVERSITAS Western Pacific and Asia), as Treasurer for the DIVERSITAS Scientific Committee, as member of the Executive Committee of the Japanese Ecological Society, and of the Steering Committee of the Global Canopy Program.

Recent papers authored by Prof. Nakashizuka have appeared in Ecology, Journal of Vegetation Science, Landscape Ecology, Plant Ecology, Journal of Tropical Ecology, American Journal of Botany, Molecular Ecology, and Science. He is one of the editors of the books, Diversity and Interaction in a Temperate Forest Community. Ogawa Forest Reserve of Japan (Springer-Verlag; 2002) and Biodiversity Research Methods (Trans Pacific Press; Melbourne, 2002).
