Prior to joining the faculty at the University of Wyoming, Prof. Barbier held positions at the Environment Department, University of York (UK) and served as Director of the London Environmental Economics Centre of the International Institute for Environment and Development and University College London.

Prof. Barbier has more than 20 years experience as an environmental and resource economist, working mainly on the economics of environment and development issues. He has served as a consultant for a variety of national, international and non-governmental agencies, including many UN organizations and the World Bank. His applied work has focused particularly on issues of land degradation, wildlife management, trade and natural resources, coastal and wetland use, tropical deforestation, biological invasions and biodiversity loss.

Prof. Barbier has written or edited fifteen books in the economics of environment and development field, and has been published extensively in both academic and popular journals. His latest book is Natural Resources and Economic Development, which will be published by Cambridge University Press in 2005. In addition, he has served on the editorial boards of several leading economics and natural science journals, and he appears in the 4 th edition of Who’s Who in Economics.
