Freshwater Consortium

This is a DIVERSITAS activity initiated, jointly with the EU Biofresh project, in 2011. The goal of this Freshwater Consortium is to enhance communication and coordination among the many groups that work on research and conservation of freshwater biodiversity and ecosystems. This consortium is an informal group open to major organisations and research/conservation projects on freshwater biodiversity.

The consortium, launched in February 2011 at a meeting in Montserrat, Spain, includes the following members:

  • BioFresh Project
  • RESTORE Project (Sweden)
  • Conservation International
  • ESSP-Global Water Systems Project (GWSP)
  • IUCN-Freshwater Biodiversity Unit
  • Wetlands International
  • FAO
  • UNESCO-Institute for Water Education
  • The Nature Conservancy
  • World Wildlife Fund - freshwater group
  • RAMSAR was not represented but mentioned its interest in the Consortium.

The goal of the first meeting was to identify priorities of each major group/project and global priorities for conservation and sustainability of freshwater ecosystems and biodiversity.
