Implementation activities

© Schelly

Implementation of the freshwaterBIODIVERSITY scientific strategy, requires collaboration between ecologists, sociologists, economists, stakeholders and policy makers. This collaboration seeks to establish an international network with the objective of providing long-term effective governance and protection for freshwater biodiversity based on solid scientific guidance. Innovative methods for data collection and analysis are required, as are protocols for integrating formal and informal knowledge. Workshops, publications and projects by international networks of scientists are generating knowledge that is being used by stakeholders. Six categories of activities are carried out by the freshwaterBIODIVERSITY network under the supervision of its Scientific Committee in order to implement the freshwaterBIODIVERSITY Science Plan:

  • Building a network: Working cooperatively with foundations, governmental agencies and major biodiversity programmes / organisations to implement the freshwaterBIODIVERSITY Science Plan
  • Research activities: Supporting and coordinating the development of research projects:
    • We are proactive in the search of on-going projects to be linked to our activities
    • We support coordination of multi-partners / cross projects
    • We act to stimulate and develop new research projects including, as necessary, submission of applications to granting bodies
  • Observation: Participating in- and delivering the science for- the establishment of a global freshwater ecosystem observing system
  • Assessment activities: Delivering scientific syntheses
  • Science-policy activities: Developing concrete links with policy fora (e.g. CBD, World Water Week, World Water Forum)
  • Capacity building activities: Developing products towards building capacity in developing countries and for other stakeholders (practitioners and policy makers) as well as building capacity through the above implementation activities.
